The Swarm

My clinical site is also a teaching hospital.  This means that our floor not only has student nurses they have student doctors.  As I was at clinicals this week I got to witness the fledgeling doctors as they descended upon the nurses station like a swarm of locust.

As they all scurried off to see the patients they left an absolute mess behind them.  Almost every chart had been removed from the chart shelving and left on the desk or counter.  Many charts had pending orders sticking out of them and were not in the specific place for charts with pending orders.  A few charts were even left open, hello, HIPPA anyone?

I was between things to do so I leaned against the wall with my clinical instructor and just watched in awe as they came, consumed and left.  My clinical instructor was none too happy about the damage that had been done, especially about the charts with pending orders.  How was one to know if there were pending orders if the chart is not in the right place?  The thing that bothered me the most was that these are new doctors and they are learning that it is okay to enter the nurses domain, make a huge mess, and not take care of it.  It really shows why many nurses dislike doctors, especially the fresh ones.
